Test Standards Reference

These reference conditions explain the purpose of each test but are not universal acceptance criteria for every product. Always follow the approved drawing, customer requirements and test method; chemical and corrosion tests must be performed by trained staff.

  • Cross-cut adhesion: cut a 10 × 10 grid at 1 mm spacing, apply approved 3M tape and pull twice at the same place. The coating must not lift or peel unacceptably.
  • Coating thickness: measure the specified locations with a calibrated gauge. The drawing or customer requirement sets the limit.
  • Clear-lacquer check: expose a small area using the approved method. A colourless removed film can confirm transparent lacquer or e-coat.
  • Electrical isolation: use a continuity pen or approved method. Insulating lacquer must not show unintended conduction or leakage.
  • Alcohol resistance: 60% food-grade alcohol for 30 minutes. Alcohol should not visibly change colour and the finish should remain acceptable.
  • Protective-film humidity: 57°C, 95–98% RH for 48 hours; no rust, colour change or peeling.
  • Ultrasonic heat and humidity: 70°C ultrasonic water treatment for 30 minutes, then 57°C, 95–98% RH for 48 hours; no unacceptable corrosion or finish loss.
  • Leather-contact ageing: 57°C, 95–98% RH for 48 or 72 hours, as specified; use the specified five-level rating where applicable.
  • Neutral salt spray: 5% NaCl at 35°C for the stated 24, 48 or 72 hours.
  • CASS: 50°C, pH 3.1–3.3 for the stated 4 or 72 hours.
  • Nitric-acid resistance: 30 seconds; solution and handling follow the approved laboratory method.

Neutral salt spray and CASS are different methods. Their hours cannot be exchanged. See Salt spray test.

Environmental reliability equipment is used to assess finished hardware and assemblies under high-temperature or temperature-and-humidity conditions. The approved method defines the actual conditions and acceptance criteria.

Function and packing checks can also include a 1 m drop test involving 30 drops across faces, edges and corners; vibration or load tests; trial assembly with production parts and moulds; and packing checks for quantity, orientation, cleanliness, protection and batch matching. Use the approved product method for the exact acceptance criteria.

Record the method and version, equipment and calibration status, sample and batch, actual conditions and duration, before-and-after evidence, defects and final decision. A report that states only “Pass” without the test conditions cannot be verified later.
