PVD

PVD, or physical vapor deposition, is a vacuum coating process used for selected decorative and performance-focused hardware finishes. Its appearance depends on the substrate, surface preparation, coating system and agreed reference sample.

Discuss the target colour, gloss, component geometry, handling and service environment before choosing PVD. The film is thin and follows rather than hides scratches, waves and particles, so substrates such as stainless steel are normally polished, brushed or blasted first. Deep recesses, shadowed areas and fixture points also require a practical coverage review.

PVD is not a direct substitute for every electroplated appearance. Available colour, coating system, process temperature, part size and service environment can all affect the choice, so suitability should be validated on the actual component rather than selected by colour name alone.

Use controlled lighting and a retained approved sample when assessing appearance. Consider colour difference alongside coverage, adhesion and the relevant corrosion or wear requirement. The approval record should identify the substrate and surface preparation because the same coating colour can look different on polished, brushed or blasted surfaces.
