Stainless Steel

Stainless steel forms a protective passive film through its alloying elements. Its combination of strength, corrosion resistance and clean metallic appearance makes it useful for clips, back plates, springs, pins, housings and other hardware with demanding structural requirements. It is a family of alloys rather than a single material; the grade and material condition affect corrosion resistance, magnetism, forming, machining and polishing.

Stainless steel has a relatively high melting temperature, is difficult to cut and can work-harden. Stamping development must allow for grain direction, tool clearance, springback and burr orientation. CNC machining requires suitable tooling, cooling and workholding. Complex forms that require extensive manual grinding or polishing take more processing time, while thin or elastic parts need checks for fatigue, edge safety and permanent set.

Natural stainless steel can be polished, brushed, blasted or passivated. Decorative colours are commonly created with PVD. Because a PVD film is thin, it follows rather than hides scratches, waves and particles, so controlled grinding and polishing come first. Stainless steel is not technically limited to PVD: other coating or plating routes may be possible with specialist activation and interlayers, but adhesion, process temperature, colour and corrosion requirements must be validated.

Stainless steel is a suitable choice when a design needs thin-section strength, spring behaviour, a natural metal finish or a corrosion-resistant base. For deep relief, intricate cavities or economical high-volume casting, compare the complete route with alternatives such as zinc alloy rather than selecting by material name alone.

  • Treating “stainless” as immunity to corrosion in every environment. Chlorides, crevices, contamination and poor cleaning can still cause staining or attack.
  • Approving PVD before the substrate texture is stable. The coating will reproduce inconsistent polishing.
  • Specifying only “stainless steel” without a grade, thickness or condition, which creates uncertainty in forming, welding and finish results.
